Ik heb de bedenker van de Orbis, James Madelin, ontmoet op de Photokina in Keulen. Het originele plan daarna was dat ik een Orbis zou krijgen voordat de verkoop zou starten. Door allerlei andere zaken is dat niet gelukt en ondertussen is de Orbis al weer een tijdje leverbaar.
Ik heb mij exemplaar ontvangen en uitgeprobeerd. Lees verder voor mijn bevindingen.

I met the Orbis creator, James Madelin, at the Photokina in Cologne. The original plan was was that I would receive an Orbis before the sales would start. All kinds of stuff happened to prevent that and the Orbis in the meantime is on sale for quite some time.
I received my Orbis and had a chance to try it out. Read on for my findings.

Ik denk niet dat de Orbis een professionele ringflitser kan vervangen. De Orbis is een prima hulpstuk voor de minder bedeelde (amateur)fotograaf die graag het effect van een ringflitser wil nabootsen. Dat is misschien niet het juiste woord want er wordt niets nagebootst. De Orbis doet exact hetzelfde als een ringflitser, alleen dan met behulp van een reportageflitser als lichtbron.
Voor mij is het ideaal om te gebruiken in mijn modelfotografie. Ik heb geen echte ringflitser en de investering daarin is voor mij niet zinvol. Daarvoor zou ik hem te weinig gebruiken. De Orbis daarentegen kost nog geen 200 euro, is licht en compact en past perfect in mijn werkwijze.

I don’t think that the Orbis can replace a professional ringflash. The Orbis is a perfect tool for the less fortuned (amateur)photographer who would like to reproduce the effect of a ringflash. Maybe not the right choice of words a nothing is reproduced. The Orbis does exactly the same thing as a ringflash, but using a ordinary flash as a light source.
For me it’s ideal to use in my model photography. I don’t own a ringflash and the investment in one would not be sensible. I would not use it enough for that. The Orbis on the other hand costs less than 200 dollars, is light and compact and perfectly fits in the way I work.

Ik ga u hier niet vertellen hoe de Orbis in elkaar zit, alleen maar dat het een stevig ding is. Het is een opzetstuk voor een reportageflitser en past op volgens mij elke flitser die je ook direct op de camera kan plaatsen. Zelfs op Nikons lichtkanon, de SB-900.
Op dit moment is er nog geen bevestiging te krijgen om de Orbis aan de lens of camera vast te maken. Dat betekend dus dat je de flitser en de daarop gestoken Orbis in de linkerhand moet houden. Persoonlijk heb ik daar geen problemen mee. Aan de zijkant van de flitser bind ik een Pocketwizzard Plus II vast en kan dus draadloos flitsen. Ik ben nou eenmaal niet zo gek op TTL flitsen.

I am not going to tell you how the Orbis is made, only that it is a sturdy piece. It is an slide-on piece for a flash and to my knowledge fits any ordinary flash that you can also place on your camera. Even on Nikons lightcanon, the SB-900.
At this moment in time there is no clamp available to mount the Orbis on the lens or camera. That means that you will have to hold the flash and placed Orbis in your left hand. Personally I don’t have a problem with this. I tie a Pocketwizzard Plus II to the side of the flash and fire it wireless. I for one am not fond of TTL flashing.

Je kunt de Orbis op verschillende manieren inzetten. Natuurlijk gewoon als ringflitser waarbij je door de Orbis heenschiet. Je krigt dan die typische look in je foto’s. Schaduwloos met een hele kleine halo rondom je onderwerp. Meteen herkenbaar als genomen met een ringflitser. Dat is leuk voor een paar foto’s per shoot maar gaat snel vervelen.
Het wordt al heel anders als je meerdere flitsers inzet met nog steeds de Orbis als ringflitser. Een schaduwloos beeld met toch highlights aan de zijkanten of op het haar bijvoorbeeld.
Maar waarom beperken tot het standaard gebruik. Met de Orbis heb je een grotere lichtbron die heel goed creatief is in te zetten. Ik heb zelf nog niet echt kunnen experimenteren maar heb wel al een paar ideetjes in mijn hoofd.

You can use the Orbis in several ways. Of course as an ordinary ringflash where you shoot through the Orbis. You will get that typical look in your images. Shadowless with a very small halo around the subject. Instantly recognisable as taken with a ringflash. That’s nice for a coupe of images per shoot but bores really quick.
It will become completely different when you use several flashes with the Orbis still as a typical ringflash. A shadowless image with highlights on the sides or hair for instance.
By why limit yourself to standard use. With the Orbis you have a bigger lightsource that can be put to creative use. I didn’t get a change to really experiment but I do have several ideas in my head.
