Gelukkig werkte het weer deze keer beter mee, een mooi zonnetje en een lekkere temperatuur.
Ook nu weer een groot aantal modellen en fotografen, en niet te vergeten visagisten (daar hebben we er helaas altijd te weinig van). Ook nu was er weer een verlaten pand gevonden dat was overgenomen door graffiti kunstenaars.

Luckily the weather did co-operate this time, beautiful sunshine and nice temperatures.
This meet again lost of models and photographers, an lets no forget, make up artists (of which we always seem to have not enough of). We managed to find an old abandoned building that was taken over by graffiti artists. (continue reading…)

Bijna onherkenbaar is ze. Ik zeg bijna omdat trouwe lezers van dit blog haar natuurlijk al lang hebben herkend. Angie, mijn trouwe en geduldige model die ook nu weer in was voor experimenten. Ditmaal in een heuse studio. En met een heuse visagiste, Corry van der Pluijm van everywhair.nl.

Ik heb al eerder hier over de Orbis Ring Flash adapter geschreven. Naarmate dat ding langer in mijn bezit is, krijg ik meer tijd en gelegenheid het in verschillende situaties uit te proberen. Een van de mogelijkheden is het gebruik van de Orbis bij productshoots.

Ik heb de bedenker van de Orbis, James Madelin, ontmoet op de Photokina in Keulen. Het originele plan daarna was dat ik een Orbis zou krijgen voordat de verkoop zou starten. Door allerlei andere zaken is dat niet gelukt en ondertussen is de Orbis al weer een tijdje leverbaar.

Ik heb mij exemplaar ontvangen en uitgeprobeerd. Lees verder voor mijn bevindingen.

I met the Orbis creator, James Madelin, at the Photokina in Cologne. The original plan was was that I would receive an Orbis before the sales would start. All kinds of stuff happened to prevent that and the Orbis in the meantime is on sale for quite some time.

Ik had vandaag een afspraak met James Madelin op de Photokina. James is de man achter de Orbis ring flash voor Speedlights.

Hij liet me een pre-productie model zien van de Orbis en die ziet en voelt goed.
Je stopt simpel je flitser, zelfs de nieuwe hele grote Nikon SB-900, in de zwarte “houder”. Het is ontworpen om in de hand te houden en via een kabel, CLS of een andere methode te worden afgevuurd.
Het is licht van gewicht maar ziet en voelt zeer degelijk.
James vertelde me dat de Orbis binnen enkele weken beschikbaar is.
Sorry, maar ik heb geen foto’s gemaakt met de Orbis maar dat is mijn schuld, niet van James.

I had an appointment with James Madelin at Photokina. James is the man behind the soon to be released Orbis Ring Flash for Speedlights.
He showed me a pre-production model of the Orbis and it looks and feels good.
You just stick your flash, even the new huge Nikon SB-900 fits, into the black “receiver”. It is designed to be hand held and triggered by cable, CLS or any other means.
It is light-weight but looks and feels solid build.
James told me the Orbis will be available in a few weeks time.
Sorry guys, I was not able to take a few shots with it, but that is my fault, not James’.

Als je je afvraagt waarom ik er zo verlopen uitzie? Zo zie ik er uit om acht uur ’s morgens na een hele dag en nacht werken. Ben de hele nacht op geweest om een oefening te fotograferen (ga naar het Dutch Defence Press Blog voor het verhaal). Maar wat heb ik in mijn hand, met grote dank aan Roeland Koene van Nikon Professional Services, een Nikon D3. Te leen voor de nacht om uit eerste hand te ervaren hoe de hoge ISO het doet van dit beest, Nikon’s vlaggenschip DSLR.

Een symposium is meestel niet de meest spannende opdracht die je kunt krijgen. Voordeel is dat het meestal statisch is, sprekers achter een spreekgestoelte en misschien een forumduscussie achter een tafel. Ik besloot al mijn locatieverlichtingsspullen mee te nemen.

A Symposium is not the most exciting assignment you can get most of the time. An advantage is that it is mostly static, speakers behind a pedestal and maybe a forum discussion behind a table. I decided to take all my location lighting gear with me. (continue reading…)

Wat doe je op een avond na Kerst en je bent alleen thuis? Je gaat wat experimenteren met je spullen. Alles naar de huiskamer versleept en opgezet. Betekend wel dat je naast de fotograaf ook de rol van model op je moet nemen Maar ja, een nieuwe foto van jezelf is nooit weg. En als je net als ik (en ik denk de meeste fotografen) niet graag zelf op de foto gaat, is dit de ideale wereld. Onderaan deze post een foto van de complete setup met beschrijving.

What do you do after Christmas when you’re home alone? You go experimenting with your gear. Drag eveything into the livingroom en set it up. That means that besides being the photographer, you are also the model. But then again, a new headshot is always welcome. And if you’re like me (and I think most photographers are) and don’t like to have your picture taken, this is the ideal world.
